Supporting Mobility: Donation of a Walker for an Elderly Mother

On February 13, 2025, at 81/4, Udugama Road, Bataduwa, Galle, the Legends Lions Club donated a walker to an 81-year-old retired government servant and single mother recovering from surgery at Karapitiya Hospital. During a heartfelt gathering with well-wishers, the elderly woman’s walking stick unexpectedly broke, highlighting her urgent need for mobility support. Recognizing this, the Legends Lions Club stepped in to provide a walker, ensuring her safety and independence. The recipient and her family expressed deep gratitude for this timely assistance, while the club was commended for its commitment to service. Legends Lions Club President Lion Methsiri De Silva led the initiative, reinforcing the club’s dedication to community welfare.

Spiritual Enrichment and Giving: Poya Day Observance

On February 12, 2025, at Sapumal Pedesa Sri Dharmarama Temple, the Legends Lions Club, led by Director Lion Anosha Niranjala, organized a special Poya Day program. The event included offering alms to 83 observing Sil, a midday almsgiving, and providing medicinal donations for the sick. Monks conducted Dhamma sermons, Buddha Pooja, and religious observances, while Lion Anosha Niranjala led a Dhamma discussion. Additionally, food, beverages, and religious offerings were sponsored by Legends Lions Club members, along with their spouses and children. The total sponsorship amounted to LKR 92,296, with LKR 1,112 allocated per participant for 83 individuals. Eight Legends Lions members participated, fostering spiritual growth and mental well-being. The temple’s chief monk and devotees acknowledged the initiative’s significance, enhancing their understanding of Buddhist teachings and deepening their devotion.

Inspiring Future Leaders: Leadership Training & Student Support

On February 11, 2025, at Sumangala College, Hikkaduwa, a leadership training and motivational session was held for 130 Ordinary Level and Advanced Level students, with the participation of the principal and academic staff. A distinguished speaker shared insights, inspiring students to set goals and overcome challenges. The session emphasized practical engagement, boosting students' confidence and presentation skills. As part of the initiative, students were also provided with milk packets and bottled water. The school administration recognized the program’s impact, while the Lions Club played a key role in organizing it. Lions Ranjith Jayathileke and Methsiri De Silva participated, reinforcing the club’s commitment to youth empowerment.

Compassion in Action: Supporting the Elderly in Need

On February 11, 2025, at Galle Osanagoda, Bope Crossroad, the Lions Club conducted a heartfelt donation project, providing essential food and medicine worth LKR 6,575 to a 99-year-old destitute woman living in extreme hardship without electricity or clean water. This initiative aimed to uplift and support vulnerable individuals facing severe living conditions. Lions Club Legends Lion President Lion Methsiri De Silva and Region 8 Zone 1 President Lion Upul Chandrasekara actively participated in this noble cause. The recipient’s daughter and son-in-law extended their gratitude to the Lions Club for their generous contribution and unwavering commitment to humanitarian service.

House Donation

Project Chairman : Wanniarachchige Don Gamini Shantha

We built a new house, spending over 4 million rupees, for a poor family who had been living in a slum in the Rambukkana area. The house was handed over on 12th February 2025. The house features two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a portico. The main sponsors were Lion Gamini Wanniarachchi and his wife, Lion Lady Inoka Sarojani. The house handover ceremony took place on 12th February 2025. PDG Kumudu Kithsiri attended as the chief guest, along with Lion Gamini Wanniarachchi and his Lion Lady, Club President Thushara De Silva and several club members. Note: I discussed this matter with the District Governor following the initial rejection of approval. The Governor advised that only the bills related to expenses incurred during the current Lions year should be submitted. Accordingly, I have attached only the bills that were available and could be obtained from the suppliers. Therefore, I am reporting only the amount that pertains to this Lions year.
